Day 1
We meet at the trailhead located at the Mono Village
Resort on the shores of Upper Twin Lakes, near the
town of Bridgeport. After a pack check and gear discussion
we begin our hike into basecamp up the Horse Creek
drainage into the heart of the Sawtooth Range. Some
of our approach involves cross-country travel. We
set up our basecamp near a beautiful tarn (alpine
pond) with views up towards Matterhorn Peak. The afternoon
is spent setting up an alpine camp and learning knots
and proper rope management techniques. The evening
is spent acclimating and enjoying a hearty backcountry
meal prepared by your guides
Day 2
Today we spend learning the basics of alpine rock
climbing techniques on smaller rock climbs near camp
while acclimating. Skills covered will be alpine rock
anchors and protection possibilities, effiecient and
fast multi-pitch climbing techniques and alpine self
rescue basics. We will also review proper ice axe
and cramponing techniques that may be needed to approach
and descend alpine rock routes.
Day 3
Today we will pick a technical multi-pitch rock route
on one the nearby peaks in the 5.6 to 5.8 range and
will cover moving efficiently over alpine rock and
alpine route finding and navigation techniques. We
will also try to cover multi-pitch rapelling techniques
in the mountains.
Day 4
Today we summit Matterhorn Peak via the North Butress
Route (5.6, 6-7 pitches) or the Double Dihedral route
(5.8, 6-7 pitches), putting all our new found alpine
rock climbing skills together. We will descend the
East Couloir route, possibly using ice axe techniques.
Day 5
The morning is spent either ticking off yet another
nearby alpine rock climbing route or practising more
anchoring and protection skills, depending on group
desires and energy levels. In the afternoon we break
camp and arrive at the cars from 3-5pm.
