This grand tour of three of California's most important peaks gives one a broad tour of California's mountains. In 16 days we summit Mount Whitney - the highest peak in the continental United States, Mount Lyell - Yosemite's highest mountain, and Mount Shasta - California's largest volcano. Along the way we explore the remote backcountry of Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks.
We provide private ground transportation from and to San Fransisco. You will travel with your own professional mountain guide for the entire trip who will also act as your tour guide in the front country. Lodging is provided from the first night in San Fransisco to the final night back in San Fransisco. While in the backcountry we will sleep in tents and enjoy fine "backcountry gourmet" cuisine prepared by your mountain guide.
The tour begins with a drive to Yosemite Valley where we spend the afternoon taking in the sights of one of the world's most amazing natural sights taking in the views of Half Dome, El Capitan and Yosemite Falls. Then we head to the Yosemite high country where we shoulder our backpacks and spend three days summiting remote Mount Lyell, the highest in Yosemite National Park. Along the way, we cross the Lyell Glacier, Yosemite's largest.
After a rest and travel day to the town of Lone Pine, the sight of old American western movies, we begin an adventurous backcountry hike into a remote area of Sequoia National Park, where we spend 5 days hiking to the summit of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the United States outside Alaska. Instead of taking the shorter and very crowded trail up Mt Whitney, we summit Mount Whitney from the backside while traveling cross country through the remote and spectacular Miter Basin.
After Mt Whitney, we begin to travel North towards Shasta, exploring the old western ghost town of Bodie along the way. Going from the high desert of the Eastern Sierra, we travel into the lush cascades mountain range on our drive towards Shasta.
Once at Mount Shasta, we spend two days ascending this large snow-covered volcano. The summit day is a long one in which we use crampons and ice ax to ascend the classic Avalanche Gulch route on Mt Shasta's South side. The view from the top of this 14,000 ft volcano is second to none. Then it's back to San Fransisco where we enjoy a final celebration.
